About Me (Drew Thornley)

Born and raised in Alabama, I earned my B.A. (economics) from The University of Alabama and my J.D. from Harvard Law School. After practicing law and working in public policy, I began my teaching career. I spent almost six years as a lecturer at The University of Texas at Austin, where I taught Business Law, Commercial Transactions, and Corporate Law. I left UT-Austin, to accept a tenure-track faculty position at Stephen F. Austin State University, where I now serve as Associate Professor of Legal Studies (Tenured). At SFA, I teach Business Law, Real Estate Law, Sports & Entertainment Law, and Business Principles, and Business, Ethics, and Society. In addition, I have served as an instructor at Kaplan University (Environmental Policy and Management; Economics of Environmental Management), Concordia University Texas (Business Law; Money, Banking, and Credit), and The University of Texas at San Antonio (Analytical and Logical Reasoning). I am currently pursuing my Executive MBA from Quantic School of Business and Technology.

Throughout my 13+ years as a collegiate educator, I have advised students who are interested in attending law school. I have lost count of the number of advising meetings I have had with students, the number of personal statements I have edited, and the number of recommendation letters I have written, but none of it has ever felt like work. On the contrary, advising students has been such an honor and joy. I sincerely care about students and want them to succeed, so being a part of their journey has been a tremendous privilege.

My hobbies include traveling, exercising, crossword puzzles, and spending an unhealthy amount of time streaming foreign crime dramas. I am a die-hard fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide, top-flight European club soccer, the NHL, and Formula 1. My wife and I are blessed with three young children, who are the greatest things ever to happen to us. Being a dad is my greatest joy.

My Philosophy on Teaching/Advising

My philosophy on advising students is pretty simple: Be honest. Be encouraging. Give my best. These are the things I have always done for students in the past, and they are exactly what I intend to do for all students in the future. I am passionate about education and about students. If this were not true, I would not be in academia, and I would not have started this business. If my heart is not in it, then I am wasting students' time and money, and I never want to waste either. I want students to know I value them and do not view advising as an assembly line of students to whom I offer impersonal, uniform services. Instead, I always try to tailor my services to the individual. I want students to be confident I am invested in them and will work hard to ensure that I give them personalized and appropriate advice and coaching. If you decide to hire me for any service(s), this is exactly who I will try to be for you. Your future is something I take very seriously, and I would not be in this business if I did not believe I could help you or did not truly care about your success.
